OVAL OFFICE – DAY

KATE stands behind her desk.

AMY faces her. Still. Direct.

MATT sits off to the side, watching.

19.

Silence as Amy finishes.

Kate processes. Once.

KATE

So we don’t understand it.

And we’re still expected to act.

AMY

Yes.

KATE

And acting is the risk.

AMY

Yes.

Kate turns to Matt.

KATE

You agree?

MATT

I do.

KATE

You’d send people back up there?

MATT

I’d rather that than pretend

this waits politely.

Kate absorbs that.

KATE

This isn’t a weapon?

AMY

Not in the way you mean.

A beat.

KATE

That’s not comforting.

AMY

It’s accurate.

Kate steps away from the desk. Thinking.

KATE

If we do nothing?

Amy doesn’t rush it.

20.

AMY

Then it finds another way.

Kate looks at her.

KATE

Here.

Amy doesn’t answer.

That’s enough.

Kate exhales. Decision forming.

KATE (CONT'D)

I hate this.

MATT

You always do.

She shoots him a look — but it lands.

Kate moves back to the desk. Opens a folder.

KATE

Limited mission.

Observe only.

She looks at Amy — firm.

KATE (CONT'D)

You do not open it.

AMY

Understood.

Kate turns to Matt.

KATE

You don’t fly.

MATT

Kate—

KATE

No.

A beat. He lets it go.

MATT

Then I want everything.

Live.

21.

KATE

You’ll have it.

She signs.

KATE (CONT'D)

If this goes wrong—

AMY

It will.

Kate almost smiles despite herself.

KATE

Then we contain it.

Fast.

She closes the folder. That’s it.

KATE (CONT'D)

Keep it small.

No heroes.

Amy nods. Turns to go.

AMY

It feels old.

Kate looks up.

KATE

So do I.

Amy exits.

Silence.

Matt watches Kate now — not the President.

MATT

You did the right thing.

KATE

That’s never the question.

KATE (CONT'D)

The question is whether it’s

in time.

Matt has no answer.
