Marwen's burial ceremony in Diggers Cave

Chapter Twenty-Three

Last Rites

Diggers Cave

Int. Diggers Cave — Day

Marwen’s body lies on a bed of woven twigs.

Feelgood squats beside the body, lips moving in silent prayer.

Juba enters, followed by Budya. Juba’s eyes burn with recognition as he stares at the alien mural.

Feelgood shuffles to the mural, starts a fire with a wooden drill.

Flames leap up.

He throws bark, leaves, and feathers onto the embers.

Blue sparks fly.

Feelgood breathes into a ceremonial wood-pipe.

The group taps sticks rhythmically.

The Old Man dances, his bare feet shuffling across the floor.

The beat intensifies, the cave fills with primal energy.

At the crescendo, Budya guides the trance-like Juba to the open silver capsule.

Juba steps inside, curls into a ball.

The cylinder begins closing with a mechanical HUM.

The chanting stops.

Feelgood spreads his arms.

The capsule seals with a sharp HISS.

Ext. Diggers Cave Area — Dusk

The day draws to a close.

A hunter’s moon rests quietly over the northern horizon.

Stars begin to fill the sky.

Peace settles across the open plains.

Like lightning, the alien mirage appears.

It hovers near the cave opening.

No lights, no clue to any life-form—just a splinter.

Waiting.

The alien craft waiting outside the cave at dusk

Int. Diggers Cave — Continuous

A low murmur emanates from the cave. Feelgood holds out his arm. The voices cease.

Overwhelming knowledge of magic burns in every set of eyes.

An aura of anticipation fills the air.

The fire flares.

Feelgood turns his head toward the entrance.

Lifts himself from his squatting position.

Places his open palm upon the capsule.

As though an invisible hand reached inside the cave, the capsule lifts smoothly, lingers momentarily.

The mob parts as the capsule tracks its way toward the entrance.

The last glimmer of soft daylight fades as the capsule merges with the golden craft, becomes part of it.

Feelgood hobbles outside, looks up.

Gone.
