NASA KENNEDY SPACE CENTER
MISSION CONTROL – DAY

NASA controllers wait in silence.

Eyes fix on the inactive overhead monitors.

Endurance II orbits appear as a figure eight to compensate

for the earth's flattened representation.

Matt sighs as he addresses a senior operator at her terminal.

MATT

It's been twelve hours since

Commander Schuster's last

transmission. Let's go over it

again.

OPERATOR

(reading from keyed notes)

Okay. Twelve eighteen, Eastern

Standard Time. Fifth orbit directly

above the Solomon Islands. We had

no warning. Transmissions seemed

normal, all systems check out.

MATT

Replay the digital images of the

last ten minutes to the master

screen.

The operator wheels to another flat console, presses a series

of touch-sensitive buttons.

The screen ahead goes blank.

She rewinds the images.

A flash of Earth lights the large room.

It's as though they're traveling on the shuttle, looking

down.

81.

MATT (CONT'D)

(whispering)

That's one hell of a hurricane down

there. Could it affect them?

OPERATOR

(shrugging)

The meteorological department have

named the Hurricane Duchess. And

the word is, this hurricane came

out of nowhere. It could only

affect them if they're out of

orbit.

They watch as the image rolls over and over, then settles

back to normal.

MATT

(gasping)

What the hell!

The image goes blank.

Schuster's final words plays over the intercom.

OPERATOR

We have to assume Endurance went

down where the last message was

received.

MATT

We've scanned the area. No trace of

them.

High-resolution images snap onto the overhead screen. The

colossal swirl of hurricane Duchess moves across the earth.

The operator further enhances the images.

Endurance's anterior profile comes into view.

Then, the hurricane vanishes, like it was snatched away.

Endurance hits the ocean.

MATT (CONT'D)

There!

She rattles off coordinates.

OPERATOR

(instantly)

And get this. Mad Water Delta, near

Cactus Loop. Australia.

82.

He picks up the safe telephone with a direct line to the

White House, waits.

MATT

(on telephone)

Kate, we've located Endurance II. I

need access to a SEAL team and a

chopper. You need to inform the

Australian authorities we'll be

conducting a rescue mission in

their space.

KATE

Matt, this needs State approval.

I'll connect with DOD now to get a

plan moving. How long have I got?

MATT

Hours. One more thing. I need Amy

for this. Let her know, get her to

my office soon as.

KATE

On it.

CHAPTER 22 - FLEABAG DOWN - IMAGE - PICKUP.

NEAR STINKWOOD ISLAND, OUTSIDE CACTUS LOOP
NIGHT

FLEABAG'S truck rattles south, bounces over a little-used

scrub track.

The fossils lie in a bag beside him.

The road dwindles to nothing.

Virgin bush scrapes the chassis as the engine SCREAMS through

the night.

FLEABAG

(desperation in his voice)

Come on, you beauty. Don't fail me

now.

Wind cuts through the windscreen.

Insects whip into the cab, splatter against the back screen.

The truck LURCHES over a small embankment, comes to a jarring

halt.

The wheels spin, fail to grip the softening filth of the dry

riverbed.

83.

Fleabag's head SNAPS forward.

His lip splits open as his mouth SMASHES into the steering

wheel.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(blood dribbling)

Shit...

He opens the door, steps outside, sinks to his knees in mud.

As he struggles to stand, he looks int the cab, sees light.

The fossils are glowing with otherworldly energy.

The glow intensifies, and suddenly Fleabag's vision blurs.

The light seems to penetrate his mind.

He claps his head in his hands.

MONTAGE - FLEABAG'S MEMORIES

- Fleabag's knife plunging into Calvin Hemming's chest in the

alley, the man's shocked eyes as he falls

- Blake witnessing him flee the scene, the moment that

started this chase

- The ancient cave, Marwen emerging confused and frightened

from the capsule, reaching out for help

- Fleabag's rifle firing, Marwen's head snapping back, the

old man crumpling

- Grabbing the glowing fossils with greedy hands while

Marwen's blood pools on the cave floor

- The destruction following in his wake - Hurricane Duchess,

people dying.

END MONTAGE

Fleabag staggers, overwhelmed by the visions.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(whispered horror)

Jesus... what have I done?

The fossils pulse brighter, as if responding to his

recognition.

84.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(to the fossils)

All of it... the storms, the

death... because I killed that old

man. Because I took you.

He turns his head to listen.

A ROAR in the distance, getting louder.

A fifteen-foot wave appears as the moon illuminates it.

Gathering froth and debris rushing toward him.

Fleabag looks back at the glowing fossils, understanding

flooding through him.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(with growing realization)

You don't belong to me. You never

bloody did.

The wave approaches. Fleabag makes a desperate choice. He

lunges back toward the truck to grab the dilly bag.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(shouting over the roar)

I'm sorry! I'm sorry for what I

did!

The flash flood hits with tremendous force.

The truck lifts like a toy.

Fleabag, clutching the fossils, is swept into the churning

water.

As he tumbles through the current, the KUTJI SPIRIT swirls

around him.

The spirit WRENCHES the dilly bag from Fleabag's hands with

supernatural force.

He tries to hold on, but the spirit is too strong.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(desperately)

No! I wanna make this right!

But the Kutji spirit drags the glowing fossils down into the

depths, toward where Endurance II lies at the bottom of the

delta.

85.

Fleabag is swept in a different direction, battered by

debris, pulled toward a large rock formation where his hands

find purchase.

He drags himself onto a ledge, gasping, empty-handed.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(coughing up water,

staring at the dark

water)

They're gone.

He sits against the rock, exhausted, bleeding.

Nearby, the lighthouse on Stinkwood Island.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(with quiet understanding)

That's where this gotta end.

He struggles to his feet, his shoulders slump in defeat.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(to himself)

Frederick Bagley, you've been a

monster your whole poxy life. Time

to find out if a monster can

change.

Directly above him, the alien mirage appears.

FLEABAG (CONT'D)

(head shaking)

I though I'd seen it all.

Determines, he starts walking towards the lighthouse.

MAD WATER DELTA
UNDERWATER

Deep beneath the surface, the Kutji spirit settles the

glowing fossils near the downed shuttle.

The fossils pulse.

The spirit coils around them protectively, watchful.

CHAPTER 23 - LAST RITES - IMAGE - BURIAL.

DIGGERS CAVE
DAY

MARWEN'S body lies on a bed of woven twigs.

86.

Feelgood squats beside the body, lips moving in silent

prayer.

JUBA enters, followed by BUDYA. Juba's eyes burn with

recognition as he stares at the alien mural.

Feelgood shuffles to the mural, starts a fire with a wooden

drill.

Flames leap up.

He throws bark, leaves, and feathers onto the embers.

Blue sparks fly.

Feelgood breathes into a ceremonial wood-pipe.

The group taps sticks rhythmically.

The Old Man dances, his bare feet shuffling across the floor.

The beat intensifies, the cave fills with primal energy.

At the crescendo, Budya guides the trance-like Juba to the

open silver capsule.

Juba steps inside, curls into a ball.

The cylinder begins closing with a mechanical HUM.

The chanting stops.

Feelgood spreads his arms.

The capsule seals with a sharp HISS.

CLOSE-UP - The sealed cylinder containing Juba.

DIGGERS CAVE AREA – DUSK

The day draws to a close.

A hunter's moon rests quietly over the northern horizon.

Stars begin to fill the sky.

Peace settles across the open plains.

Like lightning, the alien mirage appears.

It hovers near the cave opening.

87.

No lights, no clue to any life-form – just a splinter.

Waiting.

SECONDARY IMAGE - WAITING

DIGGERS CAVE – CONTINUOUS

A low murmur emanates from the cave. Feelgood holds out his

arm. The voices cease.

Overwhelming knowledge of magic burns in every set of eyes.

An aura of anticipation fills the air.

The fire flares.

Feelgood turns his head toward the entrance.

Lifts himself from his squatting position.

Places his open palm upon the capsule.

As though an invisible hand reached inside the cave, the

capsule lifts smoothly, lingers momentarily.

The mob parts as the capsule tracks its way toward the

entrance.

The last glimmer of soft daylight fades as the capsule merges

with the golden craft, becomes part of it.

Feelgood hobbles outside, looks up.

Gone.

CHAPTER 24 - MOONRISE - IMAGE - MOONRISE.

MUDDY BANK
NEAR LIGHTHOUSE – EVENING

Blake helps Sarah up the muddy bank.

SARAH

I'm good now.

Thoughtfully, Blake nods.

SARAH (CONT'D)

What is it, Blake?

BLAKE

Ever heard of Kutji?

88.

SARAH

Danny mentioned something.

BLAKE

I'll tell you what I know the

moment we get back to the

lighthouse. Come on.

As they climb the last rise, the sun dips below the horizon.

Light glows from the lighthouse dome.

Danny races through the entrance, holds his mother.

DANNY

Mum! You're okay. But you look like

you've been roughed up.

SARAH

(bending to kiss his

forehead, ruffle his

hair)

I'm good, Danny.

DANNY

(standing back seriously,

trying to sound manly)

Are you okay, Blake?

SARAH

(smiling)

Blake, is it? We have come a long

way.

DANNY

I saw you through the telescope.

The crocodile... everything.

And I saw some weird stuff. The

aliens have taken Juba!

Sarah rolls her eyes.

LIGHTHOUSE DOME – CONTINUOUS

Once inside the dome, Blake diverts Danny to get some food

organized.

He takes Sarah by the hand, looks into her eyes.

BLAKE

We may see some things that are a

bit hard to take in.

89.

SARAH

(tilting her head)

You mean the weird stuff Danny

mentioned?

BLAKE

Yeah. Supernatural things. Things

we would normally scoff at. And

that's only the start of it. There

has to be more to this.

SARAH

We'll just have to wait and see.

DANNY

(waltzing in carrying

three metal plates)

Beans.

Blake looks about for a place to sit, notices the box taken

from under the wooden bench.

It's open, with a sprung lid in two halves. He places his

plate on the bench, moves the oil lamp to see inside.

He picks up the envelope, turns it in his hands.

In faded black ink, it has his name written on it.

Blake sits in the leather chair.

Sarah tends to her ankle while Danny peers through the

telescope at the calming waters below.

SARAH

(wincing as she adjusts

her foot)

So much for a quiet place to ride

out the storm.

BLAKE

(looking around the dome)

This place... it's not random that

we're here.

DANNY

(turning from telescope)

What do you mean?

Blake reaches for the wooden trunk Danny had opened earlier.

He picks up the envelope with his name on it.

BLAKE

Danny found this.

90.

SARAH

(curious)

How's that possible? We've never

been here before.

Blake carefully opens the envelope, unfolds a letter written

in his father's handwriting.

BLAKE

(reading)

"Son, if you're reading this,

you've found your way home."

He looks up at them, then continues reading.

BLAKE (CONT'D)

"This lighthouse isn't just a

building - it's a promise. A

promise that lost souls can always

find their way back to where they

belong."

DANNY

Your dad wrote that?

BLAKE

(nodding, emotional)

Twenty-three years ago. Before he

died.

Blake sets the letter aside, shows them the photographs from

the trunk - his parents at the lighthouse construction site.

BLAKE (CONT'D)

My father built this place. Left it

to me. I only found out a while

back. It's why I left the army.

SARAH

(softly)

And that's why you came north.

BLAKE

I thought it would just be... I

He looks around the dome, touches the glass panels.

BLAKE (CONT'D)

Turns out he left me exactly what I

Danny moves closer, studying the photos.

91.

He picks up another photo - his parents holding hands at the

lighthouse base.

BLAKE (CONT'D)

Dad was a carpenter. Mum a teacher.

Nothing special, just... good

people who believed in building

things that last.

DANNY

Like this place. With an alien

thrown in.

Blake looks out at the delta where they'd nearly lost each

other.

BLAKE

All those years, I thought they'd

abandoned me. Left me with nothing.

DANNY

But they didn't.

BLAKE

No. And somehow... it guided me to

you two.

Thunder RUMBLES in the distance. Blake stands, moves to the

window.

BLAKE (CONT'D)

Storm's not over yet. We'll ride it

out.

SARAH

Together?

BLAKE

(turning back to them)

If you'll have me.

Danny grins, holds up the ancient spear Juba gave him.

DANNY

Think your dad would've liked Juba?

BLAKE

(looking at the lighthouse

around them)

I think he built this place for

people exactly like us. The ones

who don't give up.

92.

The lighthouse beam mechanism creaks softly above them, as if

responding to Blake's words.

Then, a distant THUMPING sound - something approaching.

DANNY

What's that?

BLAKE

I'll be buggered. NASA.

DANNY

(pointing)

It's landing on the delta!

Blake rushes down the stairs.
